Weight purchased this painting by Mary Fedden for the collection in 1962. Fedden was also a tutor at the Royal College of Art. This landscape demonstrates Fedden’s interest in the use of flattened space rather than the expansive landscape. Robust tall plants fill the foreground.
Austrian Landscape 1960 oil on canvas by Mary Fedden (b.1915).
View across an alpine valley from an elevated perspective, evergreen trees growing in clumps to either side. Robust tall plants standing in the foreground partially obscure the scene. Distant mountains lie beyond.
This landscape demonstrates Fedden’s interest in the use of flattened space rather than the expansive landscape. Fedden is best known as a still-life painter. Her works are characterised by her love of decorative pattern, simple forms and flattened space. She paints at home, in her houseboat on the Thames, using favourite objects in her studio and her cat. She paints these favourite objects in a strong stylised way.
Fedden was a tutor at the Royal College of Art from 1958 to 1964 and married the artist Julian Trevelyan.
