Street Scene

This drawing by Lowry purchased by Carel Weight for the collection in 1958 also reflects Weight’s eclectic artistic interests. Weight was drawn to the work of Lowry because of their shared interest in urban imagery and industrial townscapes. Like Weight, Lowry’s works often focus on eccentric characters. This is one of three drawings by Lowry in the collection.

Street Scene, about 1940 pencil by L S Lowry (1887-1976).

Busy street scene; the composition is divided diagonally into two sections by a stairway with iron railings. On the upper level stand terraced houses of varying sizes whilst on the lower level two more substantial buildings are partially visible. These serve to frame the composition. Figures of all ages fill the composition, several accompanied by small dogs.

Carel Weight purchased this drawing for the collection. He was drawn to the work of Lowry because of their shared interest in urban imagery and industrial townscapes. Like Weight, Lowry’s works often focus on eccentric characters.
