Crew of Whitley Bomber

Rothenstein completed this drawing when he was unofficial war artist to the RAF in the Second World War. Rothenstein purchased this drawing for the collection in 1941.

Crew of Whitley Bomber 1940 crayon on paper by William Rothenstein (1872-1945).

Five-man crew of a bomber, standing, wearing combats and carrying their kit. They pause whilst the second figure from the right, who stands face-on, consults a map or chart. To left, three of them look towards him, all facing right. To right, the fifth faces left, his hands on his hips. The airman standing second from left is Sergeant N P Simmons who is the subject of a separate drawing by Rothenstein in the collection. Rothenstein completed this work during his time as an unofficial war artist to the RAF in the Second World War.
