Red Magnolia

Although less ambitious than his other subjects, Spencer’s studies from nature were an important part of his output. Rothenstein purchased this painting for the collection in 1938.

Red Magnolia 1938, oil on canvas by Stanley Spencer (1891–1959).

Painting shows cultivated garden and parkland viewed through the branches of a flowering magnolia tree, which spreads diagonally across composition from lower left corner.

Stanley Spencer was the most original British painter of his generation. During the 1930s he earned a living from his landscape paintings. Although less ambitious than his imaginative subjects, his studies from nature are an important part of his output.
