Flooded Tree Derwentwater

Landscape was central to Fay Godwin’s photography and she became a leader in the field. This image of a flooded tree with its roots partially submerged in Derwentwater in the Lake District has great sensitivity. It captures the atmosphere of the place on a grey winter’s day.

Flooded Tree Derwentwater 1981 photographic print by Fay Godwin (1931-2005).

This photograph of a flooded tree with its roots partially submerged in Derwentwater in the Lake District was commissioned for the Presences of Nature exhibition at Tullie House in 1981.

Godwin was a leading landscape photographer also well known for her portrait photographs of authors. Her landscape photographs taken with great sensitivity capture the atmosphere of the place.
