Holy Family, 1874

Burne-Jones also produced this new stained glass window design for Morris and Company. It can be seen in the centre of the east window of Ponsonby Parish Church, Cumbria.

Holy Family 1874 by Edward Burne-Jones (1833 - 1898). Black chalk.

The infant Jesus lies sleeping; beside him kneels Mary, her eyes closed and her hands joined in prayer, and Joseph, leaning on his staff. Two angels kneel to their left, one of whom plays a musical instrument whilst the other holds a scroll of music.

This is the stained glass window design for the centre of the east window of Ponsonby Parish Church, Cumbria. Morris and Company designed the stained glass.

There are these inscriptions on the exhibit:

  • dark (illegible) with snow
  • pale blue
  • Morris and Co. 449 Oxford St., London W (below) 1455
  • 'The Holy Family' in Paisley Abbey 1876 or 'The Repose' at Brighouse Yorks 1874
