St Agnes' Eve, 1852-1860

Elizabeth Siddal was one of Rossetti’s most important models who later became his wife. Rossetti encouraged her to become an artist. This drawing was inspired by Tennyson.

St Agnes' Eve 1852-1860 by Elizabeth Siddal (1834 - 1862). Ink.

This drawing shows a young woman with long flowing hair kneeling in prayer, her arms outstretched and resting on the parapet of a balcony or bridge upon which stands the figure of an angel. It was inspired by the work of Tennyson and interprets the following lines; 'one Lady...Whose heart brooded...On love, and wing'd St Agnes' saintly care, As she had heard old dames full many times declare...

There are these inscriptions on the exhibit:

  • By Lizzie R Tennyson's St Agnes
  • The above is the autograph of W M Rossetti by whom this sketch was given to me on June 11th 1898
  • This drawing was originally in the collection of Mrs Burgess of Ringmer Lewes Sussex and it is more than probable that the second inscription on the back of it is in her handwriting. Gordon Bottomley Nov 11th 1916
