Duntisbourne Rouse

Again in this romantic pastoral etching Griggs has made the church the focus of the composition. Ernest Gimson, the Arts and Crafts designer, married in this ancient chapel in the Cotswolds.

Duntisbourne Rouse 1927 by Frederick Landseer Maur Griggs (1876–1938). Etching

This etching is number 11 of 25 impressions made. An ancient chapel stands upon a hillside beyond a stone field wall. A flock of sheep graze in the field in the foreground dissected by a small stream bordered by rocks and water plants. A crescent moon and flock of rooks hang in the sky above the chapel.

Griggs dedicated this work to Ernest Gimson, the Arts and Crafts designer, who married in this ancient Cotswolds Chapel. Griggs was noted for his exceptional draughtsmanship, his commitment to technical skill along with imaginative compositions, evidence of which we see in this example. I

n 1922 Griggs became one of only a few etchers ever to be made an associate of the Royal Academy and was elected RA in 1931.
